AGGRESSION

Aggression can be one of the most frightening experiences a dog owner can encounter. It can stem from a warning growl to all out war. Most aggression is fear based, fear of someone, an object, losing something, not getting what is expected. In the dogs mind the aggressive response is correct, to handle aggression we need to redirect the dogs behaviour to reduce or remove the conflict causing the problem.

It is essential that aggressive behaviour is treated early, it is learned in a single action and each episode reinforces the response, for this reason you should not try to demonstrate your dogs aggression by encouraging him to repeat it.

When looking at aggressive behaviour it is essential to consult your Vet to rule out any possible clinical problems since there are many medical reasons that can trigger off an episode.

Calling in the Pros

With aggression it is safer to seek professional help, the safety of the family and that of others is at risk from this behaviour. The outcome for a persistent offender could be a heavy fine for the owner and the destruction of the dog.
